An ode brought to the joie de vivre, constantly threatened to be unraveled. In Tunis, a homosexual could be sentenced to three years of prison. In his four-wall den, Mouaad films his surroundings with eagerness, tenderness, spontaneity. He sings James Blunt songs, dances, chats with his cat; is there any hope for another day tomorrow?
Imagine a poem which destroys itself upon being written; an art with the quality of self-annihilating or, worse, of being silenced. The director’s gaze is urged by the desire to grasp as much as possible, to describe and encapsulate life as it is. Mouaad el Salem’s film journal, which also serves as a one-man-show without ever showing Mouaad’s face, depicts someone who has just discovered the wonders of cinema, in its a priori sense, like a cine-glaz for which any manifestation of life is worth filming. And then there’s something else: the urgency of these subversive images is the shout of help of a man who won’t cut his roots with his country to move to a safer corner, but rather live in fear and hope for change. (Georgiana Mușat)
