Over a static, red foreground, a woman tells the story of an abusive relationship that culminates in domestic violence.
Over a static, red foreground, we hear the voice of a woman telling the soul-shattering story of an abusive relationship that culminates in domestic violence. By taking over a vernacular expression and transforming it into his film’s central visual metaphor, Paci proposes a “subjective point of view” that can equally apply to both abuser and abused, while simultaneously underlining one of the major schools of thought in the history of non-fictional cinema: the fact that certain traumatic events are so deeply brutal that they elude visual representation.
Since the late 1990s, Adrian Paci (born 1939) has developed an artistic practice that includes video, film, painting, photography, and installation. A central theme of his work is displacement, which Paci explores through depictions of global migration using a poetic, metaphorical language that probes into the relationships between history, reality, and the moving image, into the way images change and move between film and painting, as well as into the shifting nature of personal memory.
