A splendorous and apparently deserted villa is overrun by a pack of dogs. In the vacuum that is borne in the moments immediately following an act of violence, the still live tableaus are revived through the sheer force of animalism.
In “Lacerate”, Janis Rafa is inspired by painterly expression – in particular, by the works of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi – in order to construct a poignant parable on the nature of domestic violence. A splendorous and apparently deserted villa is overrun by a pack of dogs. Yet what we witness is not the moment of violence, but rather, its immediate aftermath; a space that is wantonly brutalized, yet nonetheless static, akin to a body subjected to violence, abandoned at the hands of the animal protagonists, long time a cinematic denominator of uncontrollable forces. (Flavia Dima)
Janis Rafa primarily employs the language of cinema in her work, which comprises feature films, video essays, and video installations. Her works, which are often permeated by elements of magical realism, explore the symbolic potential of the relations between humans and other species, touching on universal themes such as mortality, co-existence, and environmental awareness.
