In a small and faraway Indian village, the mythological tale of the goddess Kalsubai is still alive in the community of the Koli tribe. She shows herself under a human shape to a cow herder, offering to join him as his daughter – but not without setting two crucial conditions
Shot on an unusual and rare, 3:4 aspect ratio, as if to emulate the appearance of old view-master snapshots, “Kalsubai” blends ethnography and mythology to create a two-fold portrait: first, that of a fabled mountain goddess and of her genesis, and secondly, that of the women inhabiting a small village in the Indian region of Maharashta. Rooted in a proto-feminist tale that subverts traditional gender roles, this telling of the story of goddess Kalsubai – an entity both generous (offering miracles to women in need) and vengeful (cursing those who defy her rules) – comes to life through the women and lanscapes which Yudhajit Basu and Rachit Pandey lovingly and patiently shoot with their camera.
