Using her signature fluid camera movements, Laure Prouvost returns with a mediation on the act of (un-)learning, musing on the tension between concepts such as change, interiority and exteriority, physicality and psychology.
An increasingly discussed term in left-learning circles is that of “unlearning” – a process by which one deconstructs the pre-fabricated beliefs (generally regarding society and the Other), that they have passively assimilated throughout their lifetimes. Addressing her spectators in the second person, Prouvost creates a visual representation of this process, subverting traditional cinematic language and hinting upon the traumatic ruptures set into motion by the pandemic. Blending the artificial and the natural, object and subject, RE-DIT-EN-UN-IN-LEARNING is an oneiric experience which captures the shifts and doubts that many of us have felt over the course of the past two years. Laure Prouvost received the prestigious Turner Prize in 2013 and has exhibited internationally at renowned institutions such as Tate Britain, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Portikus in Frankfurt Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and New Museum in New York. Playing with language as a tool for the imagination, Prouvost is interested in confounding linear narratives and expected associations among words, images and meaning. She combines existing and imagined personal memories with artistic and literary references to create complex film installations that muddy the distinction between fiction and reality. In 2019, her project DEEP SEE BLUE SURROUNDING YOU was presented at the French Pavilion during the Venice Biennale 2019.
