Before the Twin Towers collapsed on 9/11, their image had turned into a visual leitmotif (or cliché) of films set in New York City throughout the 80s and 90s. In their latest found footage short, Giradet and Müller create a vast collage of such shots across a myriad of genres.
We all shudder when we see the Twin Towers in legacy films, given their gruesome ulterior fates, as the footage of their collapse was seen by millions around the world in real time – but just how often did cinema use their image before the tragedy of 9/11? The artistic duo composed of Christoph Girardet și Matthias Müller also asked this question of themselves, offering an answer in „Misty Picture”, an ample collage of images of the WTC found across a multitude of films shot across the final decades of the 20th century – from the classics (Manhattan, Home Alone) to the obscure, from comedies and dramas to cop movies and finally disaster flicks, thus acting as a grim premonition in this context.
