Slush is a 3-day congress whose stakes are tech start-ups development, a capitalist outbreak where large investors intersect. “If your heart wants it (remix)” is a reconstruction of this event.
“If your heart wants it (remix)” symptomatically illustrates corporate culture, respectively as one focused on growth and constant gain — its obsessions being quite palpable in the documentary — trend, technology novelty, augmentation, digital, transhuman. Takala works with documented material on the field, at congresses, and voice-overs; without them merging in a natural diegesis, but rather a diegesis created by her, in a somewhat camp note — the conversations between investors being visibly manufactured to represent a neoliberal stereotype. At the same time, her documentary is an open call for policy regulation and reflection on how this capitalist thirst for progress can have long-term negative impact. (Emilian Lungu)
Pilvi Takala’s video works are based on performative interventions in which she researches specific communities in order to process social structures and question the normative rules and truths of our behaviour in different contexts. Her work has been shown in MoMA PS1 and New Museum, Kiasma, Palais de Tokyo, Kunsthalle Basel, Manifesta 11, Witte de With, and the 9th Istanbul Biennial. Takala won the Dutch Prix de Rome in 2011 and the Emdash Award and Finnish State Prize for Visual Arts in 2013.
