2020: A COVID SPACE ODYSSEY

Vladimir Potop, Alina Manolache

15 min.

The seven-month space mission of astronaut Jessica Meir catches the euphoria of the early days into zero gravity of the first all-female spacewalk, which is interrupted by a completely unexpected chance: that seeing the pandemic unfold from the heights of the planet’s orbit.

It is said that the noun “astronaut” cannot be put into a feminie tense. The change must happen, and the need to do so is directly captured in a montage culled from the NASA archives. Jessica Meir is the protagonist of a transition to a new world – a world in which women can explore outer space on their own, while back on Earth, humankind has been enveloped by the pandemic, becoming increasingly alienated as it’s trapped between the four walls of their homes. In a game of intimate distances and closeness, under the sign of isolation, standard space shuttle imagery combines with Meir’s off-screen testimonies, documenting a female victory that is offset by the news from home. Nowadays, the Unknown seems to have landed on Earth. (Daria Barbu)
