Conceived as a video installation, „The Future is a Safe Place in My Braids” imagines performative rituals to heal the trauma of racism and projects a utopian future in which the Roma witch is the leader of a world in which she stops the historical cycle of oppression.

A ritual in which all energies are channeled towards the destigmatization of Roma culture, led by its female leaders. This foray into oppressive history materializes in the incantations that haunts the shapes and colors projected on the bodies of witches. The performers’ auras are intensified by the director’s focus on graceful, yet vehement gestures, as an act of opposition towards the stereotypical image of witches in the collective consciousness. The deconstruction of mystical practices merges with the political undertones of the text in this dance of energies and symbols, mythology is caught in the nets of the meditation on futurism. MIHAELA DRĂGAN

Mihaela Dragan is a multidisciplinary artist,  the fondator of the independent Roma theater company Giuvlipen. As a resident artist at the Para Site Center for Contemporary Art, she developed the concept of Roma futurism – new artistic current that combines elements of science fiction, Roma history and culture, Roma subjectivity, magic realism, creative technologies with magical practices. Her performance, Roma Futurism, was presented in several art spaces such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, FutuRoma – a side exhibition at the Venice Biennale, Romanian Cultural Institute in London. She was selected in International Residency for Emerging Playwrights: 2019 Focus Europe, where she wrote the play Romacen: Vremea Vrăjitoarei.
