In the mollifying, yet stingy light of the summer nights in Bucharest, a teenager is finally at peace with himself. Akin to his clandestine, hidden self, there also exists a shrouded world of plants and beings that the light of the day cannot, and would not reveal.
Andreea Borțun’s latest short is an impressive character-driven story surrounding a teenage crisis; in this moody Weerasethakul-meets-João Pedro Rodriguez aesthetic setting, there a minimal story and a liminal erotic encounter between two boys who are searching for one another. Borțun doesn’t insist upon this tension, but rather lingers on the small details that compose one’s day-by-day meaderings (disparate conversations with friends, as well as hiding places) with both the eyes of an observant and of a participant.
